Featured on ABC Health Report: The Unexpected Costs of Specialist Care

I was featured on The Health Report on ABC in an episode examining the financial pressures facing patients accessing specialist care.

The program highlighted new data showing:

  • Close to one in five Australians have delayed or cancelled specialist appointments or surgeries because of cost

  • Half of Australians report medical costs have caused them stress

  • Many patients receive unexpected bills, sometimes unrelated to their care

The episode explored growing concern about “bill shock” and calls for reform to improve transparency and reduce high out-of-pocket costs.

In the interview, I spoke about the financial complexity that can follow a serious diagnosis, my “bill shock” when I received an unexpected bill, and the need for clearer conversations about specialist fees, consent and cost transparency.
