This week I was featured in The Australian speaking about the cost of my private breast cancer care and specialist gap fees in Australia. When I was diagnosed at 46, the emotional impact was immediate. What followed just as quickly were the out-of-pocket costs. Within days, bills were arriving. Spreadsheets were started. And like many women in my community, I realised that having private health insurance did not mean treatment would be financially predictable. This conversation is not about criticising individual clinicians. It is about transparency, access and what it means for women to make informed choices about their care in a system where affordability is increasingly shaping outcomes.
