Can’t Have DIEP? PAP Flap Breast Reconstruction Explained

DIEP flap reconstruction is often the own-tissue breast reconstruction option people hear most about.

But what happens if you can’t have DIEP?

You may not have enough abdominal tissue. You may have had an abdominoplasty or other abdominal surgery. Or your abdominal tissue may already have been used for a previous DIEP flap reconstruction.

Being told DIEP isn’t suitable can leave you wondering what other own-tissue breast reconstruction options may be available.

Luan talks to Sydney specialist plastic reconstructive and cosmetic surgeon, Associate Professor Bish Soliman, about PAP flap breast reconstruction and where it may fit when DIEP isn’t an option.

They discuss how PAP differs from DIEP, who it may be considered for, and what people may want to understand about surgery, recovery and the donor site before making a decision.

They also talk about:

  • PAP reconstruction after a previous DIEP flap

  • single, bilateral and stacked PAP flaps

  • surgery and hospital monitoring

  • risks, benefits and possible donor-site changes

  • compression, scar care and returning to movement

  • preparing your home, work and support before surgery

For people exploring alternatives to DIEP flap reconstruction, this conversation may help make another option easier to understand and support better questions with a reconstructive surgeon and treating team.
